To Flip or not to Flip
"The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions." Article
So do you want to flip? I think it is important to think about what you want to achieve.
- Do you want the pupils to view the material before the lesson? - traditional flipped classroom
- Do you want pupils to view the content as they work, giving them a scaffold for help? - flipped within the lessons
- Do you want to offer support outside of the lesson? - support videos

- The teacher can give more one to one advice.
- Pupils can work at their own pace.
- Pupils can repeat tasks from previous lessons.
- Pupils can revisit the work out of lessons to reinforce their learning.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuwpVKeBqUg]Maths:One of the queens of the flipped classroom was Jess Anderson but as she is absent, looking after her beautiful little girl, I will call on some of the other great developers in the maths department.Adeline and Francois produce excellent support videos that the pupils can use to refresh their knowledge, undertake personal development and support their development in throughout the course.Francois has used the document camera and the Smartboard (to record) this resource. He clearly shows the pupils the working out for a calculation. This is a great method, as the pupils can specifically see how the written equation works. The final product is short so the pupils get the specific help that they require and it also enables the pupils to repeat/re-watch any areas where they are still struggling.[googleapps domain="drive" dir="a/iszl.org/file/d/0B4_TmW1jf2d9ck9HTVY1LXgtUGc/preview" query="" width="640" height="480" /]Adeline uses the Smartboard to record her resources . She records a series of instructions for the end of each of the units. This material does a variety of jobs: it goes through the topics that have been taught so that the pupils have a refresher course, it has common mistakes and solutions, it has specific references to possible exam questions and pitfalls. Adeline records this as one recording and there is no editing, giving you the feeling of being in the classroom!
