Timelines

Dear Jen

This has been a ride.  I have made Gantt's for years so when you mentioned timelines I thought this would be a piece of cake - how wrong could I be!I totally know what you would like to achieve and I have listed the sites that are both good and free, however none of them fulfil all of your requirements. I have been monkeying around and this is what I know so far:Knightlab  and here are websites for the Hex colour codes or HTML Colour Codes

  • Free to use
  • Can collaborate through Google Sheets
  • Entering data is straight forward
  • Live - change the spreadsheet and it automatically changes the timeline
  • Clunky and still no idea how to change colours etc
  • Painful to embed - in fact as it uses iframe you can not embed in Wordpress. You would need a add-on and that will cost you.

Some Notes for using Knightlab in Jen's Lesson

  • The dates must be in order. So if you are working together sort the sheet when you have finished. To do this. Select the Whole Sheet -Data-Sort Range - Click on DATA HAS HEADER ROW - Select  - Year - A-Z
  • You must not have blank rows so delete any blank rows
  • For Miss Lowe's class only add the YEARs as the dates will not be possible
  • At the end leave TYPE blank (for Miss Lowe) or use Title. Do not use Era.
  • Always credit the Media you are using
  • MUST File - Publish to the web the spreadsheet and then use the TOP (address bar) URL
  • In your Wordpress you can not embed this time line. Take a screen shot of the time line and add to Wordpress. Click on Open Preview in New Window and then link this URL to the screenshot in wordpress

  • Free to use (though you have limited functions)
  • Easy to set up and to enter data
  • Can add media, text and time periods
  • Nice interface, I really like Time Graphics
  • On the Free version you can not collaborate
  • On the free version of Timetoast and Tiki- Toki  you can not share it just sits in the browser

Lets have a look at these and then see where we can go. I am hoping that we will find something that works and you can use them in your next class.

............this it what they produced. Nice work!
